What’s a getaway if you aren’t getting away? The following off the beaten path destinations in Costa Rica will allow you to do just that: escape the crowds and the hustle and bustle to find tranquility.

Nicoya Peninsula

7 Costa Rica Off The Beaten Path Destinations

Views of Nicoya Peninsula Beaches from Pranamar Villas

If you’re looking to disconnect from the day-to-day and reconnect with yourself, the Nicoya Peninsula is your destination. Rediscover what it means to live in the moment and slow down. The Nicoya Peninsula is a haven for yogis, surfers, and wellness gurus. The lodges are laid back and the living is easy. Relax by the beach, take a yoga class, and re-energize at your lodge’s juice bar (they likely have one). Most people opt to fly into the little domestic airports of either Tambor or Nosara to reach their lodge as the wild roads make the region a bit difficult to navigate. Once you do arrive, you may find the best plans are no plans.

South Pacific Coast

7 Costa Rica Off The Beaten Path Destinations

Lush, raw, pristine. That is the South Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. The beaches that makeup Ballena Marine National Park are a vision for their miles of fine white sand emptiness backed by lush rainforest and for the Uvita sandbar shaped like a whale’s tail and coincidentally frequented by whales throughout the year. Dominical is a fantastic surf destination and less frequently visited than the wildly popular Tamarindo Beach to the north.

Tortuguero National Park

Off The Beaten Path Tortuguero

Since the 1950’s, sea turtles have visited what is now Tortuguero National Park due to its extreme isolation. While the park has increased the region’s popularity, the turtles still come. The region is interconnected by a mangrove waterway which deters many from navigating this off-the-grid region. Likewise, the beaches of Tortuguero aren’t great for swimming because of the crocodiles that call the waterways home. That keeps the spring breakers away! The only travelers you are bound to run into up here are nature lovers and tourists.

Southern Caribbean Coast

Costa Rica Off the Grid Destinations

When travelers see photos of picturesque beaches of Costa Rica, they’re often looking at photos of Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast where all the big name resorts are located. Costa Rica’s Southern Caribbean beaches are overlooked because of their slightly more remote location and less developed beachfront. For some, though, this is precisely what makes them so attractive. The rustic, laid-back vibe of the Caribbean, turquoise water and breezy palm-lined beaches make this a true paradise for some travelers.

Wildlife is the main attraction on the Osa Peninsula. Corcovado National Park is celebrated as one of the last remaining lowland rainforests in Central America.  The Osa Peninsula’s remote setting and national park don’t allow for easy accessibility. To access it, you’ll likely need to fly into Puerto Jimenez or Drake Bay. Once you arrive, transportation to your accommodations will need to be arranged in advance as well. The Pacuare River rafting experience isn’t for just anyone. The most adventurous travelers will love the thrill of whitewater rafting to their remote jungle lodge. The two main lodges from which this experience can be had, Tropical Rivers Lodge and Pacuare Lodge, serve as destinations in themselves. Both have on-site excursions like hiking, local community tours, and more. Talk to a Costa Rica Expert about which lodge would be a better fit for your vacation.

Southern Mountains

Costa Rica Southern Mountains Off The Beaten Path

For an authentic cultural experience, don’t miss Costa Rica’s southern mountains. A spectacular luxury stay at Hacienda AltaGracia, an Auberge Resort, can be arranged. The 860-acre hacienda exemplifies southern hospitality and offers an unforgettable horseback riding experience from their world-class equestrian center. Santa Juana Lodge is another stand out accommodation in the southern mountains. Santa Juana is one of the newest eco-lodges in the country with a multitude of activities around Santa Juana Mountain. Explore the countryside on horseback, discover a hidden waterfall, or check out a coffee plantation. This charming mountain retreat is sure to refresh and revitalize you as you forget about the hustle and bustle of home.

Solo travel isn’t just for bloggers, backpackers, and whimsical spirits trying to “find” themselves. Feel free to Eat, Pray, Love your way through Costa Rica, but you don’t have to embody the solo travel stereotype to have a great time.

There is something for everyone in Costa Rica. It’s a friendly place for solo travelers with a good selection of hotels and lodges in every major destination. Read through for some unique Costa Rica solo travel destinations and ideas from the Costa Rica Experts.

Join a Pacuare River Whitewater Rafting Overnight Trip (1 or 2 nights)

Solo travelers are often assumed to be adventurous types, which is why we must recommend the level III-IV whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River and its famous rainforest scenery. This tour can be taken as a 1-day trip from San Jose, but the best way to experience the magic of the Pacuare River is on the overnight whitewater rafting trip. This experience takes you deep into the heart of the rainforest via raft. You’ll stay in the rainforest for one or two nights before rafting back out again.

Solo Travel in Costa Rica

Tropical Rivers rafting

The best option for solo travelers is typically Tropical Rivers Lodge. Tropical Rivers operates rafting tours across Costa Rica and is the gold standard for safety and service on the Pacuare. The lodge is rustic but the natural rainforest playground that surrounds it is the real highlight. While this tour doesn’t operate for just one person, a solo traveler can join an existing trip with passengers already scheduled to the raft.

Costa Rica Solo Travel Destinations

Pacuare Lodge

Pacuare Lodge is a great option for solo travelers who want a luxury eco-lodge experience in Costa Rica. Guests of the lodge stay for 2 nights and have complimentary experiences included in their stay. On the Pacuare Lodge property, schedule a morning of zip-lining, hike to a waterfall, or just hang out at the riverside spa.

After rafting, you can transfer back to the central San Jose area OR continue by ground to Arenal or Puerto Viejo.

Skip San Jose and Explore the Central Valley

The Central Valley can be a great alternative to San Jose for solo travelers. It’s quieter. It’s greener.  The views are usually better. It’s a great entry point to Costa Rica and has some fantastically unique hotels.

Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation & Inn is a gem in Heredia, just twenty minutes from the airport. Guests arrive at a quaint inn adorned with tropical trees and flowers. Beyond the check-in area, the real magnitude of Finca Rosa Blanca is realized along meandering pathways that lead to fairytale Junior Suites. Each suite is completely different from the next. The common room features hand-painted murals by local artists and the restaurant Is one of the best in the entire San Jose/Central Valley area. The legacy of Finca Rosa Blanca is its coffee plantation, which proudly operates at the highest levels of sustainability and respect for the Costa Rican coffee tradition.

Xandari solo travel

Xandari Resort & Spa

Xandari Resort & Spa is a short drive from the airport but a world away. The lively colors and bold shapes in the architecture and design are a feast for the eyes, matched only by the sweeping views of the entire Central Valley. The spacious villas feature wide balconies, where guests can take in sunrises that creep up from behind the mountains and heavy sunsets that set the sky ablaze on a clear day. The main pool at Xandari uses the scenic valley vistas as a backdrop. The second pool is surrounded by tall, tropical trees and vegetation. Xandari is a great introduction to Costa Rica’s ecology. A morning hike along the property trails will get you acquainted with the rainforest and even a few small waterfalls. The self-serve buffet breakfast doesn’t skimp on Turrialba cheese and endless coffee; fill up here before a day of Costa Rica solo travel activities.

Get Deep in the Rainforest

Solo travel gets real when you’re in the middle of the rainforest. Instead of partying at a hostel or hitchhiking through the country, solo travel can be a much-needed escape from the busy world.

After a night or two in the Central Valley or San Jose, take a short flight to the Osa Peninsula and see what Costa Rica is really all about. The Osa Peninsula is one of the best places for solo travel in Costa Rica because the lodges are small and set within the rainforest. You’ll only be with a handful of other guests at any given moment, and you definitely won’t hear the beat of the club thumping into the wee hours of the morning.

Immerse yourself in the tranquility of remote rainforest life by staying at one of the many excellent eco-lodges in Drake Bay or Puerto Jimenez. Typically, guests stay 3-4 nights at a lodge, with all meals and transportation included. This is a great option for solo travelers, as it puts you in contact with fellow travelers but doesn’t restrict you from traveling as a group.

From the lodges in Drake Bay, you can take a guided hike of Corcovado National Park. You’ll travel by boat to the ranger station before heading out in search of rainforest wildlife. Also from Drake Bay is Cano Island, one of the best snorkel and SCUBA locations in Costa Rica.

Solo Rainforest Travel Destinations

Seaside yoga from Playa Nicuesa Lodge

Puerto Jimenez sees the most traffic of the Osa Peninsula destinations, with some of the best eco-lodge within a 45-minute drive. Solo travelers can fill their time with self-guided hikes, yoga, massage, and off-site tours booked through the concierge. Across the Golfo Dulce is Piedras Blancas National Park, with lodges Playa Cativo and Playa Nicuesa giving guests access to its untamed rainforest trails.

Eat Your Way Around

A good meal can mean everything to a solo traveler and San Jose is one of the best places to get a little taste of everything.

Grando de Oro Restaurant solo travel

Grando de Oro Restaurant

On the refined end, the restaurant at Grano de Oro has been pleasing local diners and international foodies alike for decades. The rooftop tapas bar at Hotel Presidente is a perfect way to begin or end your night in downtown San Jose.

Costa Rica Foodie Tours are a handful of specially curated experiences that give you an honest taste of local food. This fun and casual San Jose food tour will fill you up, give you some social time, and take you on a tour of the Amon neighborhood.

El Castille restaurant solo travelers

El Castille restaurant solo travelers

Ojochal is twenty minutes south of Uvita on the South Pacific coast and an off-the-tourist-radar spot where you can enjoy some of the country’s best undiscovered restaurants and hotels. Start at Castillo Kitchen for an amazing dinner in a 6-room villa called El Castillo (literally ‘The Castle’ in Spanish). The quaint property peers dramatically over the coastline and while you’d never guess just by looking, it has one of the best restaurants for miles.

New to the Ojochal scene is Hotel 360, also serving up some of the best views in all of Central America. Dine with views of Cano Island to the south and Uvita to the north. The gourmet menu is constantly reinvented and adjusted to make use of the best local, seasonal ingredients. There is a legend among Costa Rica Experts about the hotel’s creamy seafood risotto.

You don’t have to dine at only hotels in Ojochal; Citrus is a well-known local favorite that always gets it right.

Retreat & Relax

The Retreat Solo Travel

The Retreat

Some people choose to travel solo because they seek respite from the demands of our busy world. Solo travel in Costa Rica is a great chance to reset and feel good about yourself inside and out. The Retreat is a short drive from the San Jose airport, so within an hour or two of landing, you can be relaxing poolside with a healthy tropical smoothie in hand. The Retreat’s yoga platform is a perfect place to start your day.

Bodhi Tree Resort yoga solo travel

Bodhi Tree Resort yoga

Continue the wellness at Bhodi Tree Resort, of the best yoga hotels in Costa Rica. The Playa Guiones/Nosara area is one on the Nicoya Peninsula, one of the world’s five Blue Zones. You’ll definitely leave here feeling lucid and centered.

Understand Local Life in Manuel Antonio

Solo travelers who favor off-the-beaten-path locations tend to skip Manuel Antonio. It is one of the most popular places in Costa Rica, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a rich and meaningful experience.

If you’ve already hiked Manuel Antonio National Park and seen the Damas Island mangroves, try exploring the area’s impressive cultural scene.

Santa Juana Lodge Solo Travel

Santa Juana Lodge

Santa Juana is a rural mountain tour 45 minutes from San Jose and a popular day trip for people who want to explore waterfalls, try tilapia fishing, learn about sugar cane production and processing, and learn about general life in the Santa Juana mountain pueblo. For the full experience, stay at Santa Juana Mountain Lodge for 1 or 2 nights.

The Villa Vanilla Spice tour brings guests in touch with local spices and plants. Dissect the flavors of Costa Rica through an easy-paced morning on a local spice farm.

Base Yourself on the Beach

Tamarindo Beach

Tamarindo

Sometimes what you need more than anything else is a couple of days on a gorgeous beach. Tamarindo is one of the most notorious backpacker and solo travel beach towns in Costa Rica and Playa Tamarindo is one of the best beaches. In Tamarindo, you’ll share the beach with a mix of families, couples, groups, and other solo travelers. You’ll have a selection of restaurants, bars, surf shops, and beach vendors to patronize between surfing and sunning. Stay at Tamarindo Diria for something right in the center of the action or Capitan Suizo for something a bit quieter.

Playa Guiones in the Nosara area is a quieter alternative to Tamarindo, known locally as one of the chillest beaches around. This area is famous for yoga, surfing, and general good vibes. Diane Lane and The Red Hot Chili Peppers love it here so why wouldn’t you?

Santa Teresa is perfect for the traveler who is part yogi, part surfer, part explorer.  Hit the famous waves with local lifetime surfers, visit Montezuma Waterfall, rent an ATV, or simply walk along the miles of rugged Nicoya coast for the perfect solo adventure.

Go on a Luxury Safari

Nayara Tented Camp for Solo Travelers

Nayara Tented Camp

Imagine having a luxury safari tent all to yourself without going all the way to Africa! You don’t have to travel too far for luxury solo travel experience because Costa Rica has you covered.  The brand new Nayara Tented Camp is restoring the mystery of the rainforest back to Arenal, while Origins Luxury Lodge has transformed the high-end hotel scene in Upala. The addition of Kasiiya to Papagayo’s coasts rounds out the luxury safari tent experience in Costa Rica.

The beaten path can be tempting, but solo travel is one of the best opportunities to dig deeper into your destination and do things you might normally not in a tour group. As Costa Rica rises to the top of seemingly everyone’s bucket list, it’s hard to imagine any part of it could still feel remote. What, if anything, is left to explore in the age of travel influencers Instagramming every corner of the world at hyperspeed? Well, Tortuguero National Park.

Tortuguero’s unique, watery landscape has preserved it’s off-the-beaten-path allure, allowing you to experience remote rainforest with a significantly smaller number of selfie sticks than you’d find elsewhere. It’s also one of the best places in Central America to observe turtle nesting up close.

But because Tortuguero sits in the heart of the jungle, it’s not your typical resort vacation destination. It’s a full rainforest experience from start to finish, and there are a few important things to know before visiting Tortuguero.

Where You’re Going, You Don’t Need Roads

Things to Know Before Visiting Tortuguero National Park

Exploring Tortuguero canals from Manatus Lodge

You can’t technically drive to Tortuguero. Most eco-lodges will pick you up at your hotel in San Jose and drive you through Braulio Carillo National Park and on to the area of Gaupiles. This is where the road ends and things start to feel remote. You’ll board a boat and head down a winding, rural river for about an hour before reaching your lodge. This is your first taste of the jungle canal network that distinguishes Tortuguero from other places in Costa Rica.

If you want a less scenic journey to the middle of nowhere, scheduled flights and charters can get you from San Jose to Tortuguero in as little as 20 minutes.

Turtle Tours Are Serious Business

Things to Know Before Visiting Tortuguero National Park

From July – October tourists from around the world make the trip to Tortuguero to witness the nesting and hatching of sea turtles. But a tourist trap it is not. Costa Ricans take great pride in their country’s natural resources and they want you to do the same. Don’t come to Tortuguero expecting an epic turtle photo op; there are strictly enforced rules everyone on a turtle tour must follow, as per conservation laws. For example, you’ll need to bring dark, non-reflective clothing if you plan to go on a nesting tour. The turtles are an important piece of Costa Rica’s natural fabric and protecting their habitat is the top priority in Tortuguero.

Beyond the Turtles

Things to Know Before Visiting Tortuguero National Park

white-faced capuchin monkeys

The turtles aren’t the only stars in this area. The jungle canals of Tortuguero are home to the country’s most prized wildlife: monkeys, caiman, sloths, iguanas, frogs, tropical birds, pumas, jaguars, and even the elusive manatee. But be sure to bring your bug spray – not all the critters in the jungle are fluffy and cute!

Moisture

Things to Know Before Visiting Tortuguero National Park

Kayaking from Manatus Lodge

It is the rainforest, after all. Styled hair and heavy makeup don’t really survive here, thanks to the transformative powers of humidity. Best to aim for a natural look. Sure, one or two of the upscale lodges may have A/C, but once you step outside you’ll succumb to that damp, rainforest charm. So, save the space in your luggage and leave the hairdryer at home.

Humidity aside, you’ll be surrounded by water during your time in Tortuguero. Remember, there are no roads, just waterways. Between that, rain, and the pool, there are a lot of chances for your phone to fall out of your pocket. Bring small plastic bags to keep your electronics safe from the occasional unexpected sprinkle. Speaking of rain….

You’re in the Jungle, Baby

Things to Know Before Visiting Tortuguero National Park

There’s no other way to put it! You’re in the remote rainforest. You won’t have access to some of your usual conveniences (consistent wi-fi, for example), but you will be within reach of lifelong memories. The kids won’t be able to play Fortnite, but they will be able to see toucans in action. You won’t dine at a Michelin star restaurant, but you will enjoy fresh, tropical fruits and seafood. You won’t be lounging at a gigantic resort, but you will remember being in the heart of the jungle forever.

Those are the most important things to know before visiting Tortuguero. So are you up for the adventure? Be sure to get there before the rest of the world figures it out!

Corcovado National Park is one of the largest lowland tropical rainforests in Central America and the best place in Costa Rica for wildlife watching. The park is over 163 square miles, covering nearly half of the Osa Peninsula, yet remains one of the most remote regions of Costa Rica. Famously dubbed “the most biologically intense place on Earth” by National Geographic, Corcovado National Park is a treasure to researchers and nature lovers alike.

Why visit Corcovado?

There are many reasons, but perhaps one of the most notable is that the park is virtually untouched. The animals of Corcovado are not fed and rarely have human encounters. Therefore, we are able to observe wildlife in their natural healthy environments in which they were meant to thrive.

What animals are in Corcovado?

A Guide To Visiting Corcovado National Park

Red-eyed Tree Frog

You won’t need to travel far before finding animals in Corcovado National Park. Thanks to its large size, Corcovado National Park is home to big cats like the puma, ocelot, jaguarundi, margay, and the endangered jaguar. Most of the Wildcats are nocturnal and rarely seen during the daytime. Corcovado is the only place in Costa Rica where you can see all four species of Costa Rica’s monkeys: the howler, white-faced capuchin, squirrel, and spider monkey. Other animals to look out for include two-toed and three-toed sloths, endangered Bird’s Tapirs, toucans, scarlet macaws, peccaries (wild pigs), crocodiles, sea turtles, lizards, and anteaters.

When is the best time to visit?

The driest months for Corcovado National Park are December to April. The rainy season begins in May and goes through early December. September and October generally see the most rain. Some lodges on the Osa Peninsula temporarily close in October due to high rainfall. Throughout the course of a year, the park receives over 25 feet of rainfall on average. Talk to an Expert about where to go during your travel dates.

How do I get to Corcovado National Park?

A Guide To Visiting Corcovado National Park

Sierpe

Getting to Corcovado National Park is an adventure. You will first need to travel to your eco-lodge located near the small towns of Drake Bay or Puerto Jimenez. If traveling to Drake Bay from Manuel Antonio or the South Pacific Coast, private ground transportation can be arranged to Sierpe where a boat will bring you along jungle waterways to your eco-lodge in Drake Bay. It’s also possible to reach Drake Bay by flight. However, the Drake Bay airstrip is temporarily closed so travelers can fly into the Palmar Sur domestic airport where they will take a short ground transfer to Sierpe and then travel down to their Drake Bay eco-lodge by boat. Many Drake Bay eco-lodges have a day tour to Corcovado National Park included in their standard packages. Alternatively, a 50-minute domestic flight will bring you to the town of Puerto Jimenez from San Jose. To reach Corcovado National Park from your eco-lodge, charter flight, boat, or four-by-four vehicles will likely be your modes of transportation to reach one of the park’s ranger stations. Sound like a headache? Talk to a Costa Rica Expert and we can arrange this all for you.

Corcovado Ranger Stations

A Guide To Visiting Corcovado National Park

When visiting from Drake Bay, you will most likely enter Corcovado from San Pedrillo or Sirena Ranger Station, both of which are located on the northern coastline of the Osa Peninsula. Prepare yourself for a wet landing upon arrival at both stations. San Pedrillo Ranger Station is the most northern ranger station in the park and about 25-minutes away from the Drake Bay lodges by boat. Sirena Ranger Station is about one hour from Drake Bay by boat and one of the most biologically diverse locations in the park attracting scientists from around the world. The Sirena Ranger Station is also the headquarters and largest station in the park. Surrounded by secondary rainforest, many animals can be seen from the network of trails accessible from the Sirena Ranger Station. The facilities of the ranger stations are very basic. Sirena Ranger Station is the only ranger station that serves food from a restaurant. Please note that park service has greatly reduced the guest allowance into each park entrance and lodges cannot guarantee which ranger station you might be permitted to enter from.

What to Expect in the Park

There are no roads within the park. After the entrance points, park exploration is on foot. Humidity and heat can be intense. Corcovado National Park averages about 20 feet of rain each year. Dress accordingly! Hiking in the park can be especially muddy during the rainy season. Hiking along the beach can also be difficult when the tide is high.

Day Tours

Corcovado National Park Beach

Every lodge in the Osa Peninsula area has its own selection of day tours. It’s possible to explore Corcovado National Park by plane on a full day tour which includes a charter flight to Sirena Biological Station and lunch. You can also explore the park by land on a challenging full day hike which includes lunch. It’s also possible to reach the park ranger station by boat before continuing on foot. As of 2014, a certified licensed guide is required to access Corcovado National Park.

Where to Stay

Our Experts recommend staying at one of the many eco-lodges outside Corcovado National Park near the town of Drake Bay or Puerto Jimenez. Many of the lodges on the Osa Peninsula are eco-boutique hotels. While all of them require a love of nature and a sense of adventure, a few lodges even cater to the luxurious eco-adventurer. Most of the lodges on the Osa Peninsula area are all-inclusive due to its remote setting. We highly recommend booking lodging to the Osa Peninsula in advance particularly during high season. Ask a Costa Rica Expert which lodge would be the best fit for your travel plans.

What to Bring:

Hiking Shoes, hiking sandals or water shoes, bathing suit, water bottle, hat, waterproof jacket, quick-drying pants and shirt, binoculars, camera, insect repellent, sunscreen, dry bag

*If you’re entering the park through Siena Ranger Station, there is a wet landing from the boat. Be sure to wear waterproof shoes and bring a change of shoes appropriate for hiking along the trails, beach, and stream beds.

Don’t miss Piedras Blancas National Park.

A Guide To Visiting Corcovado National Park

If Corcovado National Park had a sister, it would be Piedras Blancas National Park. Located on the other side of the Golfo Dulce, Piedras Blancas used to be a part of Corcovado. Unfortunately, the park went through some private landowners some of which contributed to the park’s deforestation in the 90’s. Today, we have two separate remote rainforest park experiences. If you are looking for a bit of vacation diversity, but want to keep your experience remote, wild, and rustic, hop over the Golfo Dulce and spend part of your vacation in Piedras Blancas National Park. A couple of eco-lodges back right up to Piedras Blancas with views of the Golfo Dulce and some of the most pristine rainforest beaches in the country. Ask an Expert which Piedras Blancas lodge would be best for you.

Don’t miss Cano Island.

A Guide To Visiting Corcovado National Park

About 10 miles off the coast of the Osa Peninsula, Cano Island is another natural gem to consider while visiting the Osa Peninsula Area. The island is especially popular for snorkeling and diving as there are a number of underwater rock formations and clearer waters than along the mainland shoreline. There are as many as fifteen different coral species that can be found here and a number of threatened sea creatures. Sea turtles, manta rays, sharks, dolphins, whales and many colorful fish are some of the animals that can be found off the coast of Cano Island. Many of the eco-lodges in the area can arrange day excursions.

The Osa Peninsula is one of Costa Rica’s best destinations for an authentic nature & wildlife experience. What could be better than staying in a beautiful eco-lodge, surrounded by exotic animals and tropical rainforest? While this wild piece of Costa Rica is a natural playground for some, it is not for every traveler. Everyone should know these 7 things before visiting the Osa.

You Won’t Find Any Brand Name Hotel Chains.

Things to Know Before Visiting the Osa Peninsula

The charming tree-house style cabinas at Copa de Arbol Beach & Rainforest Resort are a far cry from your average Marriott suite.

So far, the Osa has been untouched by major corporations and hotel chains. Instead, you’ll find secluded eco-lodges nestled into the rainforest, each designed to offer an authentic nature experience. Accommodations range from rustic to luxurious, so you have quite a selection of unique bungalows and lodges to rest your head.

Protect Your Gear.

Things to Know Before Visiting the Osa Peninsula

Gearing up for some wildlife watching from Lapa Rios Ecolodge

Moisture is the enemy of electronics. Even if you don’t drop your camera directly into the Pacific, it is still susceptible to damage from the rainforest’s humidity. If you plan to bring any photography equipment or other expensive items, it’s worth it to spring for a ziplock bag to store it in when not in use. Cell phones fit well in most sandwich bags.

You Will Become an Early Riser.

Things to Know Before Visiting the Osa Peninsula

Take advantage of early mornings with an ocean front yoga class from Playa Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge.

Love to snooze til noon? On the Osa, that means you’ve slept away half the day! Don’t worry; there are plenty of tropical birds and howler monkeys to give you a sunrise wakeup call (which is about 5:30am in this part of the world). Even if you’re not a natural when it comes to early mornings, you’ll be surprised by how quickly your body will adjust.

Leave the Flat Iron at Home.

Things to Know Before Visiting the Osa Peninsula

He doesn’t care what you look like. Photo from Aguila de Osa Inn.

The Osa Peninsula is the perfect place to leave vanity at the door. The tropical rainforest is the last place you’ll need to sport an up-do. Most people opt-out of packing their styling tools and other heavy-duty beauty products because there is simply no need for it. The tropical humidity lends itself to a more natural look, and the toucans don’t mind if your hair isn’t perfectly coiffed.

Watch Out for the Sun!

Things to Know Before Visiting the Osa Peninsula

Stay hydrated and reapply that sunscreen! Kayaking excursion from Playa Cativo Lodge.

The Osa Peninsula is about 8 degrees north of the equator and the sun is strong. This alone means you will need to drink more water than you normally do during day around the office. Add in the rainforest hikes, kayaking, and snorkeling excursions and you can see how extra hydration is imperative. As for sunscreen: reapply, reapply, reapply.

Don’t Leave Your Food Out.

Things to Know Before Visiting the Osa Peninsula

Enjoying a welcome drink from Copa de Arbol Beach & Rainforest Resort

As a guest in the rainforest you will undoubtedly meet a number of its residents. Be aware that it is not uncommon to encounter bugs during your stay on the Osa. If you’re not a fan of the creepy crawlers, be sure to keep all food wrapped and stored so as not to attract an army of tiny new friends. If you’re an entomologist or general bug enthusiast, you’ll be delighted to see what happens when you leave a slice of pineapple on your nightstand.

You’ll Miss It.

Things to Know Before Visiting the Osa Peninsula

Sunsets you’re sure to miss from Copa de Arbol Beach & Rainforest Resort

The Osa’s rainforest will awaken your senses. The food is fresh and flavorful, the flowers and plants pop with color, and the sounds of crashing waves and squawking birds become commonplace after a few days. It tends to make the suburbs feel a little…muted. As with all vacations, it will take some time to readjust to the pace of normal life.

There is a lot to know before visiting Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula. If you are still up to the challenge after reading this list, then you’ll feel right at home in the middle of the rainforest.

Casco Viejo is known as Panama’s tourist district, but that doesn’t mean it lacks in local flavor. You’ll find a lot of gringo restaurants here, but you can also get real at the local fish market. If you want a drink with a view, Tantalo Rooftop Bar offers stunning views of the Panama City skyline set to a youthful vibe. Homesick? Grab some pizza and microbrews at La Rana Dorado. Panama City has some of the best shopping in Central America. We recommend boutique shops for quintessential Panamanian fashions and jewelry. Nina Concept Store is a café-boutique hybrid where you can buy trendy gifts, décor, and other artful trinkets for one-of-a-kind souvenirs. The world-class mall Soho offers name brands like Chanel and Coach, as well as fine Italian and French dining for refueling.  For a truly local shopping experience markets are always best. Mercado de Abastos is a large market full of colorful and delicious selections. Some of the best things to do in Panama City, Panama are also the most adventurous. Rent a bike and pedal down the Amador Causeway to take in views of the water and some of the city’s most accessible tourist points. This is a great, leisurely option for anyone who wants to learn a bit of history and observe everyday life in the city. For something more challenging, take a morning hike up Ancon Hill. You might catch of a glimpse of some local wildlife on the way, but the real payoff is the view!

It was time for me to conquer the Nicoya Peninsula. I had visited the famous Costa Rica “must-see” spots – Arenal, Manuel Antonio, the cloud forest, the Osa Peninsula – some of them a few times. Now I was excited to roam off the beaten path into a world-famous Nicoya Peninsula blue zone.

Nourished in Nosara

My journey started in the air, where I went from San Jose’s Central Valley to Nosara. It turned out to be one of the most gorgeous flights I’ve taken. Gliding across the Gulf of Nicoya was like an interactive 3D painting. The mountains were such a vibrant green that they didn’t seem real against the electric blue waters below. A typically nervous flyer, I was swept away by the scenery of the rugged coast. I didn’t want it to end.

A Costa Rica Blue Zone Retreat on the Nicoya Peninsula

Harmony Hotel

Less than an hour later I was poolside at Harmony Hotel, a place about which I had heard wonderful things about but could never get a feel for in pictures. When I arrived I realized it was the wonderful kind of place which, at the mercy of a photo, doesn’t seem extraordinary. It must be experienced first-hand.

Fresh Eats

A Costa Rica Blue Zone Retreat on the Nicoya Peninsula

Path leading to the Harmony juice bar

It was time for lunch and I certainly ordered well. A perfectly-seared tuna steak was my introduction to Nicoya cuisine. The food at A Costa Rica Blue Zone Retreat on the Nicoya PeninsulaHarmony was perfectly indicative of the area: simple but creative dishes of the freshest seafood, nourishing greens and vegetables, and sweet tropical fruit. You can find these things in most of Costa Rica, but here the flavors were elevated to a whole new level of freshness. The hotel is a 2-minute walk from some of the country’s best beaches – of course everything tasted fresh! I wouldn’t be surprised if the chef caught the fish himself and walked it out of the water just an hour earlier. Harmony’s juice bar is a fun retreat where the staff serves up nutrient-rich smoothies and juices made from carefully selected ingredients.

Happy Beaches

A Costa Rica Blue Zone Retreat on the Nicoya Peninsula

Playa Guiones

With a full stomach, I headed to Playa Guiones, one of the happiest beaches I’ve ever seen. There were couples in love, sun-kissed families with happy babies playing in the sand, dogs and their owners playing fetch, and no shortage of boards in the lineup. I could have spent the entire day people-watching, but I grabbed a boogie board and became part of the scenery instead. A low-flying Cessna dropped over the water to show off in front of all the beach goers, making even the most veteran surfers stop in their tracks and admire the brazen acrobatics. This place is fun.

Local Exploration

A Costa Rica Blue Zone Retreat on the Nicoya Peninsula

Playa Pelada

If that morning was all I saw of Harmony Hotel and Nosara I would still be in love. Luckily I got to explore the charming Playa Pelada, with its fishing boats bobbing gently after a day on the water. I enjoyed lunch at beachfront La Luna Restaurant and after, I walked the gravel roads to see what else I could learn. I found pilates and yoga classes, surf shops, backpacker hostels, and quaint houses. I refueled with guacamole at a local bar while watching a soccer match with a young fan.

A Costa Rica Blue Zone Retreat on the Nicoya Peninsula

La Luna Restaurant

Later I chatted with Harmony’s bartender during an evening storm. He listed all of the celebrities who enjoyed the simplicity of this low-profile corner of the world. He’d met Susan Surandon and Tim Robbins, Diane Lane, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, seen impromptu Sublime concerts, and served drinks to screenwriter Shawn Christenson as he worked on the movie “Abduction.” Then he said “Actually, Matt Damon is in Santa Teresa right now.” Perfect. That’s where I was headed next.

Revitalized in Santa Teresa

A Costa Rica Blue Zone Retreat on the Nicoya Peninsula

Another stunning flight linked me to Santa Teresa/Mal Pais on the southern edge of the Peninsula. Places like Mal Pais and Montezuma have become notorious as surfer-backpacker meccas.  I flew into Tambor, which felt like a dramatic entrance to Jurassic Park minus the John Williams score. After hugging the coast the plane descended quickly over the water and I wondered if we were even going to make it to land. Finally, right at the edge of the water, I saw the Tambor airstrip. We touched down. Whew.

A Costa Rica Blue Zone Retreat on the Nicoya Peninsula

I headed for Pranamar Villas, a 45 minute drive from Tambor on unpaved roads. With many of the peninsula’s roads still gravel, it is not uncommon to see more motorbikes and ATVs than cars. I needed some emergency items at the pharmacy and a local man was kind enough to squire me there on the back of his bike. I loved how casually everyone went about their daily tasks, and I appreciated their generosity.

Costa Rica Yoga Country

A Costa Rica Blue Zone Retreat on the Nicoya Peninsula

Despite all of the motor action, Pranamar Villas was appropriately serene. I was now in the thick of Costa Rica yoga country. Their selection of daily classes was more than enough to fit the needs of anyone interested in practicing. Between the villas and the beach was a whimsical playground of hammocks tied to random trees, just begging for someone to nap in them. I opted for one of the beach chairs closer to the water, where I watched the sun set while tired surfers trekked back home with their boards. I noticed the same laid-back, happy kind of people that I’d seen in Nosara. Maybe living in one of the world’s 5 Blue Zones really does lead to longer, happier life.

Friendly Locals

A Costa Rica Blue Zone Retreat on the Nicoya Peninsula

Santa Teresa has more than enough of what you need, including a pharmacy, ice cream shop, restaurants, and more. If you like meeting the locals, take a stroll through town and you’ll have no problem striking up a conversation, even at 8 am. A man stood on the side of the road drinking hot coffee out of a juice pitcher, and I wasn’t the least bit surprised when he reached out and invited me to join him. I was also not surprised by the old, long-haired surfers who told tales of dancing by the moon all night and riding waves all day.

Welcome Simplicity

Next I headed to Latitude 10, just down the road in Santa Teresa. This small hotel doesn’t even have a sign – just a symbol. Here I was at another ocean-front hotel with fresh food and gorgeous rooms, and refreshing simplicity.

A Costa Rica Blue Zone Retreat on the Nicoya Peninsula

Latitude 10 Resort

Now back to Matt Damon. Remember when a little bartender birdie told us Matt would be in Santa Teresa around this time? He was right. Confirmed by Tico sources on the scene. I wondered if a walk along the beach would put me in his general vicinity. Maybe we’d become friends and he’d invite me to family barbeques. Maybe he’d see my star power give me my big break. Maybe he’d ignore me and beg for his privacy. Beach-combing for celebrities; what have I become?

Tropical Tranquility

A Costa Rica Blue Zone Retreat on the Nicoya Peninsula

Playa Santa Teresa

I walked up and down the long stretch of sand, stopping along the way for photos of tropical plants and angry rocks jutting out of the sea. The sun crossed the sky as I took my time skimming the coast before eventually stopping to rest. As my lucid body sank lower into the sand I felt the euphoria of total relaxation. I had no idea what time it was because I was too busy enjoying the beauty around me to care. At that moment, all that mattered was nothing. You got lucky, Matt Damon.

A Costa Rica Blue Zone Retreat on the Nicoya Peninsula

A Santa Teresa Beach sunset

Why did I ever think I had to conquer the Nicoya Peninsula? It is rough and rugged but also very gentle and beautiful. Over three days I realized that there is nothing to conquer here, but everything to love.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest, a cool misty forest shrouded in greenery, has a truly majestic quality about it. Without a beach or volcano, it’s an easy destination to overlook, despite all its charismatic nuances. I confess I did. But now that I’ve walked through cloud 9, I’m hooked. And I feel compelled to set the record straight. I. Love. Monteverde. And I’m convinced you will too.

The Cloud Forest Reserve

6 Reasons To Add Monteverde To Your Bucket List

The Cloud Forest Reserve Hike as seen in our Classic Costa Rica standard vacation

Walk into an enveloping cool mist over mossy trails through the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. This is a must. Cross hanging bridges and discover the interconnected web of the forest and wildlife. The reserve is also a wonderland for birding. The rare Resplendent Quetzal can be found in these forests. We saw three! The vegetation in the cloud forest is especially captivating because so much of it can only be found in this cool, tropical climate.

A Cool Escape

6 Reasons To Add Monteverde To Your Bucket List

If you love the tropics but could do without the overwhelming heat – this one’s for you. Think tropical plants, light jackets, fewer bugs, and cool evenings. That’s Monteverde. If you confidently proclaim autumn as your favorite season or love a sweet dewy spring morning, Monteverde is for you. Whether it’s your main destination or a stopover on the way to the stifling coast, Monteverde is a welcome retreat.

There’s a Scene

6 Reasons To Add Monteverde To Your Bucket List

Okay I know touristy has become a bad word, but there’s a piece of me that secretly loves a town with eclectic tourist shops, funky restaurants, curious travelers, and friendly locals. This lively scene has become a part of Monteverde’s culture. And in this case, touristy does not equal lack of authenticity. Quite the opposite. Despite its popularity, Monteverde has managed to maintain its charm and it’s cool.

A Cultural Melting Pot

6 Reasons To Add Monteverde To Your Bucket List

Our Monteverde cowboy coffee break

There is, surprisingly, a lot of depth in this little town. The emerald oasis attracts groves of scientists and naturalists further contributing an affinity for all things eco to an already green destination. Located next to the dry tropical plains of Guanacaste, Monteverde has also cultivated a cowboy culture. Take a horseback ride through the countryside and you’ll know what I’m talking about. Another surprising fact? In 1951, Quakers from the United States came to Costa Rica to escape the military draft. They settled in Monteverde, building a rich life for their community. Their cultural presence is still evident throughout the region.

Monteverde Coffee and Chocolate

6 Reasons To Add Monteverde To Your Bucket List

Speaking of melting, let’s talk chocolate and coffee. My vices. Coffee is native to tropical highlands making Monteverde an ideal destination for java fiends. In fact, the coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane tour we took at Don Juan coffee plantation is ideal for any foodie. We began with a walk through the coffee plantation before we made our own chocolate, sugar cane juice, and tested different coffee roasts. Yumm!

Off The Beaten Path

6 Reasons To Add Monteverde To Your Bucket List

Surprisingly, Monteverde remains relatively off the beaten path. Why? The rugged terrain up the mountain keeps most tour buses away. Plus, there’s no beach. This alone cuts out at least half of all Costa Rica vacation-goers. But between you and me, it’s totally worth it.
