Costa Rica is a rising contender for the title of Best Family Vacation Destination. The intriguing wildlife and picturesque beaches are just a 3-hour flight from major hubs like Miami and Houston, with direct flights now offered from Newark, Chicago, and more. Costa Rica is an accessible and thrilling choice for families who want a little bit of everything.

One of the reasons families contact Costa Rica Experts for help with their family vacation is because they are simply overwhelmed by all the choices.  To help narrow down the options our Experts have selected their top picks for the best family resorts in Costa Rica:

The Springs Resort | Arenal Volcano

Best Family Resorts in Costa Rica

Large resort, activities center, hot springs

The Springs Resort and Spa is designed to offer a one-stop shop of hot springs, adventure, fine dining, and relaxation. The hotel sits in an elevated position, giving spectacular views of the massive Arenal volcano from just about every inch of the sprawling property.

During the day families can take advantage of the Club Rio Outdoor Center and enjoy activities like river tubing and horseback riding without leaving the hotel grounds. Also on-site is an animal sanctuary that features big cats, monkeys, sloths, and more.

In the evening dine in one of the many restaurants before a relaxing soak in the resort’s many hot springs.

Our Experts love these accessible options for families who want to spend less time traveling and more time doing.

Tulemar Resort | Manuel Antonio

Best Family Resorts in Costa Rica

Private beach at Tulemar Resort

Villa-style, rainforest, private beach

Beachfront hotels are surprisingly rare in Costa Rica due to conservation laws, but there are a few exceptions for families who want sand and surf within arm’s reach.

Tulemar Resort in Manuel Antonio offers direct access to a private beach and complimentary use of the hotel’s boogie boards and beach equipment. Combine this with beachside lunch service and you’ve got a whole day of family fun without ever leaving the hotel.

The newly-renovated villas are unique in their octagonal design and set into the surrounding rainforest. With full kitchens and in-unit laundry, Buena Vista Villas can easily be your beach home base for an entire week.

Tortuga Lodge | Tortuguero

Best Family Resorts in Costa Rica

Eco-Lodge, remote rainforest

It may be unrealistic to drag your kids all the way to the Amazon, but Tortuguero is a family-friendly alternative that won’t burn through your budget (and it’s a lot easier to reach).

This remote rainforest region on the northern Atlantic coast allows families to explore exotic jungle canals by boat, eliminating the hassle of taking young ones on long hikes. It is not uncommon to spot monkeys, tropical birds, reptiles, and sloths while cruising the waterways of Tortuguero with a naturalist guide, who explains the inner workings of this unique eco-system. Who says vacation can’t be educational?

Tortuga Lodge is accessed by a combination of ground and boat transfers, though families may prefer to take a short domestic flight from San Jose to minimize time in transit.

Andaz Costa Rica Resort | Papagayo Peninsula

Best Family Resorts in Costa Rica

Boutique resort, calm beaches, golf

The Andaz Papagayo Resort offers more than eye-catching design and world-class culinary experiences. The boutique resort expands its authentic charm to families with a Kids Club program that offers unique cultural options, a large family pool, and an activities beach where guests can use kayaks and snorkel gear. Custom spa treatments featuring local ingredients will delight parents in need of a bit of pampering.

The resort sits on the edge of the bay, protected from the rough surf of the Pacific. The calm waters make for worry -free swimming for all ages.

Being less than an hour from the airport is a plus for families who want to cut down on in-country travel.

Hotel Si Como No | Manuel Antonio

Best Family Resorts in Costa Rica

Boutique hotel, beach meets rainforest

Hotel Si Como No in Manuel Antonio was made for family vacations. This mid-size boutique hotel boasts a family pool, 2 restaurants, a butterfly garden, a free beach shuttle, and a small private cinema that plays family-friendly movies each evening. Wake up to gorgeous views of the Pacific and, if you’re lucky, a few monkeys hanging around your balcony.

Si Como No is just 5 minutes from Playa Espadilla and the Manuel Antonio National Park – ideal for families who want the beach and rainforest without changing locations. Other nearby activities like zip-lining, mangrove tours, and whitewater rafting are enough to keep everyone entertained and active.

JW Marriott | Hacienda Pinilla, Guanacaste

Best Family Resorts in Costa Rica

Familiar resort style, Kids Club, Golf

One of the most common requests from families traveling to Costa Rica is a hotel where the kids can have fun while the adults can relax without being too far. In this case, the Experts recommend the JW Marriott Guancaste Resort and Spa, home to the largest pool in Central America.

Indulge in a spa treatment or relax while the Kids Club enthralls the little ones. Explore the tide pools together, start a beach volleyball match, or take a family day trip to nearby Tamarindo to watch a surfing competition and eat in a local restaurant.

The resort is part of the Hacienda Pinilla development, which features a beach club, biking and jogging trails, and an 18-hole golf course.

Peace Lodge | La Paz Waterfall Gardens

Luxury, Cloud Forest, Animal Exhibits

Costa Rica is a small country but because of the varying terrain, getting from one destination to another can take 3-4 hours.  For those averse to long drives, the Peace Lodge and La Paz Waterfall Gardens are an all-in-one experience, similar to its sister hotel and fellow family resort The Springs. Just an hour north of San Jose, this is a great way to begin or end any family vacation.

Kids love the on-site animal sanctuary where they can observe big cats and monkeys almost as much as the aviary where they can feed toucans on a guided tour. Adults love that their children can see these creatures in a controlled setting. Also on the property are hummingbird and butterfly gardens, reptile and amphibian exhibits, a series of waterfalls, and a large swimming pool – perfect for kids who love to zoo and adults who love convenient luxury.

Nayara Tented Camp | Arenal Volcano

Best Family Resorts in Costa Rica

You don’t have to travel all the way to Africa to give your family an amazing tented camp experience!  If you’re heading to the Arenal Volcano region and want a top-of-the-line family eco-resort, look no further than Nayara Tented Camp. Constructed within the renowned Nayara Resorts complex, the Family Tents and Grand Residences bring luxury safari style to the Costa Rican rainforest. Each tent comes with a private plunge pool, in-room mini-bar amenities, and an eco-chic design. Enjoy amazing volcano views from Ayla restaurant and the resort’s stunning pool. Guests also have access to the dining and pool facilities at Nayara Gardens – the beloved hotel that originated the signature Nayara Resorts brand.

Koora Monteverde | Cloud Forest

The best family hotels in costa rica

While families love the unique cloud forest environment in the Monteverde region, finding family-friendly accommodations has historically been a challenge for families of 5+. Koora Monteverde has changed the game in Monteverde with their spacious suites, some of which offer space for up to 6 passengers. Nature-loving families who stay at Koora enjoy complimentary access to the neighboring Aguti Reserve, which is especially popular for night tours!

Westin Playa Conchall All-Inclusive Resort | Guanacaste

costa rica resorts for families

Costa Rica has an amazing selection of boutique resorts and eco-lodges, but families looking for a straightforward all-inclusive beach resort can find bliss at The Westin Reserva Conchal. The resort’s Family Junior Suites offer kid-friendly amenities and many of them connect, creating a spacious option for larger families. The Westin also offers access to one of the country’s best beaches, Playa Conchal.

Los Altos | Manuel Antonio

Costa Rica Best Family Resorts

The condo-style accommodations at Los Altos Resort make it one of the best options for family vacations in Costa Rica. Each condo offers two-bedroom and three-bedroom options, and the top-level Four-bedroom Penthouse Suites can accommodate as many as 8 passengers. The spacious swimming pool and central location make Los Altos a great base for exploring Manuel Antonio’s rainforest and beaches.

Tabacon Thermal Resort | Arenal Volcano

best family vacation resorts in costa rica

While this resort has an adults-only section that caters toward honeymoons and couples, families can enjoy the Tabacon Thermal Resort experience in the entry-level Orchid rooms, which have the ability to connect (when available).

The highlight of staying at Tabacon is the resort’s hot springs, which have a reputation as the best in the country. These thermal waters are fed by a natural river and surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, designed to create an experience that feels both natural and polished. Tabacon’s two restaurants offer a blend of international and Costa Rican cuisine, ranging from casual lunches to fine-dining dinners.

Navigating the Path to Paradise: A Comprehensive Guide to Reaching the Osa Peninsula

Nestled on Costa Rica’s southwestern coast, the Osa Peninsula stands as a pristine jewel of biodiversity and natural beauty. Accessible yet remote, reaching this ecological haven requires a blend of land and water travel. In this guide, we embark on a journey along the various routes to the Osa Peninsula, detailing the modes of transportation along the way!

Booking a Flight: Plane Travel

The most common way to get to the Osa Peninsula is by plane from San Jose. This is the way most of our trips our planned, with some destination-dependent exceptions. Short domestic flights can be arranged by a Costa Rica Expert into the Drake Bay airport or Puerto Jimenez airport (the main hub), depending on where you are staying. Private charter flights are also available for maximum flexibility. The flights typically last 40 minutes – 1 hour and the views are strikingly scenic.

How to Get to the Osa Peninsula Costa Rica

To get to Lapa Rios Ecolodge on the Osa Peninsula, travelers take a flight from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez. When they arrive at the local airport, a driver will pick them up for the drive to the lodge.

Once you land, you will have some combination of ground and/or boat transfer to reach your Osa Peninsula hotel.

Most flights from the Osa Peninsula depart San Jose early in the morning, so an overnight at a San Jose hotel the night prior is often necessary. If you opt for a private charter flight, you can depart from any of Costa Rica’s major destinations; this is a great option if you want to connect the Osa Peninsula with Arenal Volcano or Tamarindo. The logistics of visiting the Osa Peninsula can be a little involved, but your Costa Rica Expert will coordinate the details for you!

The Road Less Traveled: Ground Transfer + Private Water Taxi

Copa de Arbol River Boat Tour

Copa de Arbol boat transportation

Boat from Sierpe

While scheduled domestic flights and private charter planes are the fastest routes to the Osa Peninsula, it is possible to travel by land and boat from certain destinations. If you’re staying on the South Pacific coast in Uvita, we can arrange a private ground transfer to the small town of Sierpe. where private boats and water taxis shuttle guests down the scenic Sierpe River and onto the rugged, coastal shores of Drake Bay. This option is also available from San Isidro de General, Manuel Antonio, Dominical, and Ojochal.

Boat Transfer from Puerto Jimenez

Travelers visiting the Puerto Jimenez side of the Osa Peninsula can also transfer by ground from the Central and South Pacific regions. The ground transfer takes about 3 – 3.5 hours.  From there, you’ll either transfer by 4×4 SUV or by private boat to your rainforest eco-lodge.

Lodges like Lapa Rios and El Remanso are in the rainforest on the Puerto Jimenez side of the Osa Peninsula and are reached in a 4×4 vehicle. Guests arrive to dense rainforest surroundings and cliffside ocean views.

Guests of Playa Cativo and Playa Nicuesa will arrive in Puerto Jimenez and then transfer by boat across the Golfo Dulce. As the boat glides across the tranquil gulf waters, passengers are treated to panoramic views of the coastline and Piedras Blancas National Park. Expert tip: Keep an eye out for dolphins along the way!

Inter-peninsula transfer

Adventurous travelers might choose to spend a few nights on each side of the Osa Peninsula – 3 or 4 nights around Puerto Jimenez and 3 or 4 nights in Drake Bay. Travel between these two hubs is typically by ground and takes about 3 hours. Because this road crosses one of Costa Rica’s most remote stretches, road conditions vary depending on weather conditions. If you’re looking for a smoother journey, your Expert agent can arrange for a private charter flight instead.

Arriving in Paradise: Exploring the Osa Peninsula

Traveling to Osa Peninsula is an adventure Botanika Osa

In search of wildlife from Botanika Osa Peninsula

Most often, you’ll be based at your eco-lodge for the duration of your stay. These special rainforest resorts are designed to offer an inclusive experience, with all dining and activities operating on-site. Nature and wildlife spotting, yoga, waterfall hikes, sustainability tours, and cultural experiences are just some of the options available during your stay. Whether you base yourself out of Puerto Jimenez or Drake Bay will depend on the kind of experiences you want to prioritize on your trip.

Puerto Jimenez vs. Drake Bay

The Puerto Jimenez side of the Osa Peninsula is home to some of the country’s best eco-lodges and rainforest hotels. Lapa Rios and El Remanso are nestled into the rainforest, offering an immersive rainforest experience on their on-site nature trails. Botanika Osa Peninsula is just steps away from downtown Puerto Jimenez but feels like a world away. Guests can take a short trip to the hotel’s Cahui Beach Club for an off-the-beaten-path day in the sun. Across the gulf, travelers can explore Piedras Blancas National Park right from rustic Playa Nicuesa or luxurious Playa Cativo. Both are situated on the coast between the rainforest and the gulf, offering a mix of water and land adventures.

Nestled along the remote northern shores of the Osa Peninsula, Drake Bay is the gateway to two of Costa Rica’s most famous attractions: Corcovado National Park and Caño Island. Hikes to Corcovado operate daily from lodges like Aguila de Osa Inn and Copa de Arbol Beach & Rainforest Resort. Head out by boat to Caño Island for some of the country’s best snorkeling and SCUBA diving. The rugged coast is dotted with hidden beaches, connected by the popular Drake Trail walking path. Monkeys, birds, and other wildlife are commonly spotted along the route.

Reaching the Osa Peninsula is an adventure in itself.

Reaching the Osa Peninsula is an adventure in and of itself. Whether by plane, 4×4 vehicle, or boat, the journey to the Osa Peninsula offers travelers a taste of Costa Rica’s diverse landscapes and vibrant culture before immersing them in the unparalleled beauty of one of the country’s last untouched wilderness areas.

The stunning beauty of Osa Peninsula is well worth the journey, but coordinating the logistics can require a lot of time and attention to detail. Our Costa Rica Experts – who travel the Osa Peninsula routes themselves – are available to make your travel arrangements and answer any lingering questions about your journey. Ready to go? Costa Rica is known for many things: imposing volcanos, mischievous monkeys, dreamlike cloud forests, world-class coffee…the list goes on and on. Most visitors make a point to check out the rainforest, but in almost every case they also head to the beach at some point during their trip. And with good reason; Costa Rica is home to one of the most diverse collections of beaches anywhere in Central and South America. Each Costa Rica beach differs from the next, from rugged volcanic beaches to tranquil bays. You could visit the country 8 different times and have 8 different beach experiences, which just means that the choices of beaches and beach hotels can be overwhelming. Here’s a list of what we consider some of the top beachfront hotels in Costa Rica:

Arenas del Mar Beach & Nature Resort | Manuel Antonio

Arenas del Mar Beach & Nature Resort is one of Costa Rica’s original beachfront hotels. It was originally built in and still stands today as one of the best. Building on the beach is illegal in Costa Rica, where people take pride in the conservation of their natural paradise. Few hotels manage to meet the strict standards set by the government for building near coastlines. To combat their offset, Arenas del Mar has committed to integrating with nature and making sustainability a beacon of their hospitality service. With their on-site guided tours, guests are assigned a local naturalist guide for a more customized experience tinged with Arenas del Mar’s signature service.

The accommodations are an example of understated beachfront luxury, with simple room features and natural colors. Arenas del Mar’s most impressive design is its integration into the surrounding rainforest, which gives guests a nature-immersive vacation that includes the beach.

Ah, the beach. Arenas del Mar has two of them. Mhmm.

Tulemar Resort | Manuel Antonio

Beachfront hotels in costa rica

Costa Rica family vacation classic Tulemar Resort, with its octagonal premium villas and beachfront location, is consistently ranked among the best hotels in the world. It’s easy to see why.

When it comes to large groups and families with young children, travelers are often looking for ease and convenience. In the case of Costa Rica, many of these family vacationers head to Manuel Antonio on the Central Pacific coast – a mix of beach and rainforest all in one location. It’s a no-brainer for families. The tricky part is finding a hotel that meets your specific bedding and space requirements. Each group and family is different, and sometimes standard hotel rooms aren’t the best fit. At Tulemar, the 2- and 3-bedroom Premium Villas give everyone space to spread out and enjoy the views. Each Premium Villa comes equipped with a full kitchen living area, laundry, outdoor dining space, and more.

Head down to Tulemar’s beach for the day, or explore the nature and wildlife of Manuel Antonio on a guided tour.

Hotel Capitan Suizo | Tamarindo Beach

best beachfront hotels in costa rica

Tamarindo Beach

Don’t miss out on Tamarindo just because you’ve heard it can get a little rowdy. Sure, there may be gaggles of youthful backpackers and Spring Breakers here and there during the busy season, but you don’t have to base yourself right in the center of the action. After all, Tamarindo is one of the best beaches in Costa Rica. It would be a shame to miss on account of the tourist scene.

Instead of diving into the party scene, base yourself at beachfront Hotel Capitan Suizo, a tried and true boutique hotel toward the quiet end of Tamarindo Beach. You’ll still be able to get a taste of the local beach vibe; a walk down the long stretch of beach is a great way to get to know the area and scout local restaurants to try during your stay. But at the end of the day, you’ll feel that quintessential Costa Rica tranquility back in your Beachfront Bungalow at Capitan Suizo

Andaz Resort | Papagayo

Andaz Costa Rica beach

Known around exclusive Papagayo as the “un-resort” resort, the Andaz is committed to honoring local tradition and representing Costa Rica with warmth and creativity. Their beaches are the opposite of the roaring Avellanas Beach and energetic Tamarindo Beach. The gentle waters of Papagayo Bay are catered to activities like swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. This unique location on Peninsula Papagayo creates for guests a natural playground, wonderful for couples, families, and even solo travelers. Head down to the hotel’s beach club for access to all of the best features of this unusually calm golden sand beach. BONUS BEACH: Grab a kayak and paddle around the Peninsula to hidden Playa Nacascolo for a “private” beach experience. Chances are good you’ll be the only ones there!

Nantipa Resort | Santa Teresa

The Nicoya Peninsula’s Mal Pais area, which includes the notoriously chill Santa Teresa, has seen a recent resurge in tourism and it would be hard to leave Nantipa Resort out of that story. The hotel is leaning into the concept that Santa Teresa is a destination all of its own, and there is plenty to explore for first-timers to Costa Rica.

The remote, rugged coastal location of Santa Teresa (on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula) has always magnetized celebrities, but the average traveler can be spotted there, too. One of the places travelers thanks to beachfront Nantipa and its ocean view bungalows.

Nantipa is perfect for travelers who appreciate a sense of place when they travel – trendy luxury on the beach is often best achieved with a casual layout. The Experts recommend the Oceanfront Bungalow with Private Pool for the most ideal stay. You’ll have earned it on the 45-minute drive from Tambor airport – it’s mostly gravel roads.

Once you’re at Nantipa, you’ll have access to a great variety of Santa Teresa highlights. Montezuma waterfall is about 45 minutes away by ATV. You can hike around the famous cascade or even try canopy zip-lining. Day trips to Tortuga Island are popular with travelers in search of a beach adventure day, fully stocked with water activities, tasty food, and excellent guides. Horseback riding on the beach, sportfishing, surf lessons, yoga, nature tours, and other experiences can be built into your custom itinerary or arranged with the help of Nantipa’s concierge. Spend anywhere from 3-7 nights here and your idea of what a beachfront hotel can offer will be transformed.

Hotel Aguas Claras | Puerto Viejo / South Caribbean

Aguas Claras Beachfront

The South Caribbean has long been a secret sweet spot for independent travelers and eclectic ex-pats, but only recently has the Puerto Viejo area earned a reputation as something more than hostels, hippies, and wild coastline. The arrival of Aguas Claras has changed the game dramatically.

You don’t see many cottage-style accommodations in Costa Rica and you especially don’t see them done as well as Aguas Claras, a beachfront boutique hotel serving up a new side of the South Caribbean coast. The water in front of the hotel is the closest you’ll get to that “Caribbean blue” in all of Costa Rica, where 90% of beach vacations happen along the Pacific coast. There are just a few suites and bungalows at Aguas Claras, so the Experts recommend booking early.

The Four Seasons | Papagayo

beachfront hotels four seasons

The Four Seasons Papagayo is a true leader in Costa Rica’s hospitality scene, continuously walking the line of impeccable, refined service and curated vacation magic. The stunning scenic location at the very edge of the Peninsula is one of the hotel’s most prominent features, giving guests access to not one but two fantastic beaches. Four Seasons also offers special beach activities for families and groups, including private beach barbeques, snorkeling & beach tours, and picnics. Within just 45 minutes from the Liberia international airport, you can land and be at one of Costa Rica’s best beachfront hotels in the blink of an eye.

Best Beachfront Hotels in Costa Rica

Big resorts are getting a makeover and The W Resort on Playa Conchal is a gleaming example. The rooms are situated throughout the property at various heights and locations, ensuring that each room has a different view from the next. Playa Conchal is one of the best allaround beaches in Costa Rica, with its unique shell sand formation and pleasant, swimmable waters. Golf, water sports, sportfishing, and plenty of off-site Guanacaste activities are available to really round out your vacation.

Few trips are more exciting than a tropical holiday vacation. Costa Rica’s bustling rainforest and beautiful beaches are the perfect places to reconnect with loved ones, escape the cold, and ring in the New Year. It is important to remember, though, that the most wonderful time of the year is also the busiest. Planning a holiday vacation is more difficult than some people realize, so you’ll need to develop the right plan of attack. Read our Experts’ insider holiday travel tips and make your Costa Rica holiday trip the vacation of your dreams.

The Early Bird Gets the Best Hotel.

6 Costa Rica Holiday Travel Tips

Cheers to that.

The biggest challenge in planning a holiday vacation is availability. Even if you think you are getting a head start it can be tricky to find the accommodation and airfare that you want. Our Experts recommend booking your air and hotels 10-12 months in advance. Booking during this time will give you first pick of the best airfares and hotel rooms. You might be able to get away with planning your trip 2 months out any other time of the year, but waiting until the last minute means that you’ll pay a hefty premium for your plane ticket… that is if you can find somewhere to stay.

Flexibility is Key.

6 Costa Rica Holiday Travel Tips

Snorkeling on the Gulfo Dulce

Holiday travel is a different game. The more flexible you are, the better your chances of winning. It is best to go into the planning process with a loose idea of the things you want to do and see, rather than committing to a set-in-stone itinerary that is planned down to the minute. Take some time to pinpoint the major goals of your trip. Instead of “beachfront suite with a pink and yellow private Jacuzzi where Janine stayed in 2008 on her snorkeling trip” try starting with “snorkeling at the beach.” Defining your general priorities will keep the important experiences at the helm of your planning so you don’t get caught up on petty details. It will open up your options and you’ll have a better chance at creating a unique experience.

Protect Your Investment.

6 Costa Rica Holiday Travel Tips

Pool with a view at Hotel Parador

The Experts recommend travel insurance for every trip, but especially over the holidays when weather delays and other kinks are more likely to arise. Travel is an investment worth protecting!

Add a Private Tour.

6 Costa Rica Holiday Travel Tips

A private tour at Lapa Rios Ecolodge

Sometimes holiday trips can feel more like a party than a private escape. Take some time away from the hustle and bustle by opting for a private tour. This will get you one-on-one time with your guide, the best chance at spotting wildlife, and a moment of tranquility in paradise.

Make a Reservation.

6 Costa Rica Holiday Travel Tips

Enjoying dinner at the Harmony Hotel on the Nicoya Peninsula

Even if you are a guest at the hotel it is wise to make a dinner reservation upon check-in. If you want to eat at a local restaurant, ask your hotel concierge for assistance in reserving a table. One of the best parts of vacation is dining, so make sure you have a seat!

Venture off the Beaten Path.

6 Costa Rica Holiday Travel Tips

Venture off the beaten path to Santa Juana Mountain Lodge.

Every destination has its popular tourist spots and Costa Rica is no different. Areas like Tamarindo, Arenal, and Manuel Antonio are on everyone’s radar, which makes hotel availability very tight over the holidays. If you want to travel in December but don’t want to deal with the crowds, consider going off the beaten path. The Osa Peninsula is a great alternative for anyone who wants to experience more animals than people. The area’s rustic jungle lodges are small with just a handful of rooms. Even if your lodge is full, you will only see ten or twelve other people roaming around the property at any time. Some of our other favorite off-the-beaten path destinations include Dominical and Santa Teresa.

Experiencing Traditional Costa Rican Foods is an Essential Part of Your Trip

Costa Rican food is simple, but ‘simple’ isn’t bland. With Latin and Caribbean influences, a wide range of sensory experiences come with a typical Costa Rican meal. We recommend all travelers sample some of the Rich Coast’s staple dishes.

Gallo Pinto

7 Costa Rica Food Staples You Must Try

Gallo Pinto (photo from Doka Estate Coffee)

Rice and beans are the most basic element of the Costa Rican diet and Gallo Pinto is king.  Most often, it is made of black beans and white rice, cooked together until the rice soaks up all of the flavorful juices. Gallo pinto is served with many, many dishes – even breakfast!

Casado

7 Costa Rican Food Staples You Must Try

Casado (photo from one of our returning travelers)

The Casado, which translates to “marriage”, is the ultimate traditional Costa Rican meal. These full meals include a large portion of meat (usually steak or pork), sautéed onions, rice and beans, a light cabbage or palm salad, and fried plantains. It sounds too simple to be impressive, but this hearty dish always leaves an impression. Ticos (native Costa Ricans) often accompany this with Costa Rica’s favorite condiment, Lizano sauce.

Sopa de Pejibaye

7 Costa Rican Food Staples You Must Try

Sopa de Pejibaye (photo from Rio Celeste Hideaway Hotel)

Pejibaye is the fruit of a peach palm tree and is often consumed on its own or with a bit of mayonnaise. Alternatively, the thick fruit can be blended into a soup that offers a vast profile of nuanced Costa Rican flavors. The pejibayes are blended with a savory broth to make a creamy, delicious traditional Tico dish that will awaken your palate and give you something to talk about back home.

Chifrijo, chicharon

7 Costa Rican Food Staples You Must Try

Chifrijo (photo from Hacienda Pinilla)

Considered Costa Rican “bar food”, chifrijo is not decadent but it is delicious. Combine rice, beans, meat, and chimichurri with tomato and lime juice and you have a hearty Tico snack.  The meat used in chifrijo is usually chicharrones, crispy fried pork chunks, or pork skins. Scoop it up with chips or a tortilla while you catch a fútbol match on TV.

Tiradito

7 Costa Rican Food Staples You Must Try

Tiradito

Costa Rica enjoys the benefits of two abundant coasts, including the freshest seafood. You may be thinking “ceviche!”, but we recommend exploring the world of the tiradito.  Much like sashimi and carpaccio, a tiradito consists of thinly sliced pieces of seafood dressed in a light sauce. The combinations are endless, but we recommend starting with a salmon or sea bass selection. These spreads are often accompanied by lightly-fried cassava chips and other garnishes.

Tropical Fruit

7 Costa Rican Food Staples You Must Try

Granadillas

Come to Costa Rica and you will enjoy a spread of colorful, tropical fruits that border the line between whimsical and exotic. Granadillas are enjoyed by puncturing the fruit’s sturdy shell and scooping out the delicious seeds inside. Mamones look like a creature straight out of science-fiction, with their fuzzy exterior and sweet, bulbous meat inside. Guanabana, or Soursop, is used in various dishes and makes a unique addition to any smoothie. The fruit is a combination of sweet, creamy, and slightly sour flavors that remind your taste buds that you’re in Central America.

Guaro Cacique

7 Costa Rican Food Staples You Must Try

Guaro Cacique & Imperial (photo from GoPixPic)

We can’t talk about Costa Rican cuisine without recommending a drink to go with it! The country’s most popular liqueur is neutral-flavored alcohol derived from local sugar cane. Cacique is easily used in many different drinks, ensuring something for everyone. If you’ve never tasted this favorite, a Guaro Sour is a great place to start!

Solo travel isn’t just for bloggers, backpackers, and whimsical spirits trying to “find” themselves. Feel free to Eat, Pray, Love your way through Costa Rica, but you don’t have to embody the solo travel stereotype to have a great time.

There is something for everyone in Costa Rica. It’s a friendly place for solo travelers with a good selection of hotels and lodges in every major destination. Read through for some unique Costa Rica solo travel destinations and ideas from the Costa Rica Experts.

Join a Pacuare River Whitewater Rafting Overnight Trip (1 or 2 nights)

Solo travelers are often assumed to be adventurous types, which is why we must recommend the level III-IV whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River and its famous rainforest scenery. This tour can be taken as a 1-day trip from San Jose, but the best way to experience the magic of the Pacuare River is on the overnight whitewater rafting trip. This experience takes you deep into the heart of the rainforest via raft. You’ll stay in the rainforest for one or two nights before rafting back out again.

Solo Travel in Costa Rica

Tropical Rivers rafting

The best option for solo travelers is typically Tropical Rivers Lodge. Tropical Rivers operates rafting tours across Costa Rica and is the gold standard for safety and service on the Pacuare. The lodge is rustic but the natural rainforest playground that surrounds it is the real highlight. While this tour doesn’t operate for just one person, a solo traveler can join an existing trip with passengers already scheduled to the raft.

Costa Rica Solo Travel Destinations

Pacuare Lodge

Pacuare Lodge is a great option for solo travelers who want a luxury eco-lodge experience in Costa Rica. Guests of the lodge stay for 2 nights and have complimentary experiences included in their stay. On the Pacuare Lodge property, schedule a morning of zip-lining, hike to a waterfall, or just hang out at the riverside spa.

After rafting, you can transfer back to the central San Jose area OR continue by ground to Arenal or Puerto Viejo.

Skip San Jose and Explore the Central Valley

The Central Valley can be a great alternative to San Jose for solo travelers. It’s quieter. It’s greener.  The views are usually better. It’s a great entry point to Costa Rica and has some fantastically unique hotels.

Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation & Inn is a gem in Heredia, just twenty minutes from the airport. Guests arrive at a quaint inn adorned with tropical trees and flowers. Beyond the check-in area, the real magnitude of Finca Rosa Blanca is realized along meandering pathways that lead to fairytale Junior Suites. Each suite is completely different from the next. The common room features hand-painted murals by local artists and the restaurant Is one of the best in the entire San Jose/Central Valley area. The legacy of Finca Rosa Blanca is its coffee plantation, which proudly operates at the highest levels of sustainability and respect for the Costa Rican coffee tradition.

Xandari solo travel

Xandari Resort & Spa

Xandari Resort & Spa is a short drive from the airport but a world away. The lively colors and bold shapes in the architecture and design are a feast for the eyes, matched only by the sweeping views of the entire Central Valley. The spacious villas feature wide balconies, where guests can take in sunrises that creep up from behind the mountains and heavy sunsets that set the sky ablaze on a clear day. The main pool at Xandari uses the scenic valley vistas as a backdrop. The second pool is surrounded by tall, tropical trees and vegetation. Xandari is a great introduction to Costa Rica’s ecology. A morning hike along the property trails will get you acquainted with the rainforest and even a few small waterfalls. The self-serve buffet breakfast doesn’t skimp on Turrialba cheese and endless coffee; fill up here before a day of Costa Rica solo travel activities.

Get Deep in the Rainforest

Solo travel gets real when you’re in the middle of the rainforest. Instead of partying at a hostel or hitchhiking through the country, solo travel can be a much-needed escape from the busy world.

After a night or two in the Central Valley or San Jose, take a short flight to the Osa Peninsula and see what Costa Rica is really all about. The Osa Peninsula is one of the best places for solo travel in Costa Rica because the lodges are small and set within the rainforest. You’ll only be with a handful of other guests at any given moment, and you definitely won’t hear the beat of the club thumping into the wee hours of the morning.

Immerse yourself in the tranquility of remote rainforest life by staying at one of the many excellent eco-lodges in Drake Bay or Puerto Jimenez. Typically, guests stay 3-4 nights at a lodge, with all meals and transportation included. This is a great option for solo travelers, as it puts you in contact with fellow travelers but doesn’t restrict you from traveling as a group.

From the lodges in Drake Bay, you can take a guided hike of Corcovado National Park. You’ll travel by boat to the ranger station before heading out in search of rainforest wildlife. Also from Drake Bay is Cano Island, one of the best snorkel and SCUBA locations in Costa Rica.

Solo Rainforest Travel Destinations

Seaside yoga from Playa Nicuesa Lodge

Puerto Jimenez sees the most traffic of the Osa Peninsula destinations, with some of the best eco-lodge within a 45-minute drive. Solo travelers can fill their time with self-guided hikes, yoga, massage, and off-site tours booked through the concierge. Across the Golfo Dulce is Piedras Blancas National Park, with lodges Playa Cativo and Playa Nicuesa giving guests access to its untamed rainforest trails.

Eat Your Way Around

A good meal can mean everything to a solo traveler and San Jose is one of the best places to get a little taste of everything.

Grando de Oro Restaurant solo travel

Grando de Oro Restaurant

On the refined end, the restaurant at Grano de Oro has been pleasing local diners and international foodies alike for decades. The rooftop tapas bar at Hotel Presidente is a perfect way to begin or end your night in downtown San Jose.

Costa Rica Foodie Tours are a handful of specially curated experiences that give you an honest taste of local food. This fun and casual San Jose food tour will fill you up, give you some social time, and take you on a tour of the Amon neighborhood.

El Castille restaurant solo travelers

El Castille restaurant solo travelers

Ojochal is twenty minutes south of Uvita on the South Pacific coast and an off-the-tourist-radar spot where you can enjoy some of the country’s best undiscovered restaurants and hotels. Start at Castillo Kitchen for an amazing dinner in a 6-room villa called El Castillo (literally ‘The Castle’ in Spanish). The quaint property peers dramatically over the coastline and while you’d never guess just by looking, it has one of the best restaurants for miles.

New to the Ojochal scene is Hotel 360, also serving up some of the best views in all of Central America. Dine with views of Cano Island to the south and Uvita to the north. The gourmet menu is constantly reinvented and adjusted to make use of the best local, seasonal ingredients. There is a legend among Costa Rica Experts about the hotel’s creamy seafood risotto.

You don’t have to dine at only hotels in Ojochal; Citrus is a well-known local favorite that always gets it right.

Retreat & Relax

The Retreat Solo Travel

The Retreat

Some people choose to travel solo because they seek respite from the demands of our busy world. Solo travel in Costa Rica is a great chance to reset and feel good about yourself inside and out. The Retreat is a short drive from the San Jose airport, so within an hour or two of landing, you can be relaxing poolside with a healthy tropical smoothie in hand. The Retreat’s yoga platform is a perfect place to start your day.

Bodhi Tree Resort yoga solo travel

Bodhi Tree Resort yoga

Continue the wellness at Bhodi Tree Resort, of the best yoga hotels in Costa Rica. The Playa Guiones/Nosara area is one on the Nicoya Peninsula, one of the world’s five Blue Zones. You’ll definitely leave here feeling lucid and centered.

Understand Local Life in Manuel Antonio

Solo travelers who favor off-the-beaten-path locations tend to skip Manuel Antonio. It is one of the most popular places in Costa Rica, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a rich and meaningful experience.

If you’ve already hiked Manuel Antonio National Park and seen the Damas Island mangroves, try exploring the area’s impressive cultural scene.

Santa Juana Lodge Solo Travel

Santa Juana Lodge

Santa Juana is a rural mountain tour 45 minutes from San Jose and a popular day trip for people who want to explore waterfalls, try tilapia fishing, learn about sugar cane production and processing, and learn about general life in the Santa Juana mountain pueblo. For the full experience, stay at Santa Juana Mountain Lodge for 1 or 2 nights.

The Villa Vanilla Spice tour brings guests in touch with local spices and plants. Dissect the flavors of Costa Rica through an easy-paced morning on a local spice farm.

Base Yourself on the Beach

Tamarindo Beach

Tamarindo

Sometimes what you need more than anything else is a couple of days on a gorgeous beach. Tamarindo is one of the most notorious backpacker and solo travel beach towns in Costa Rica and Playa Tamarindo is one of the best beaches. In Tamarindo, you’ll share the beach with a mix of families, couples, groups, and other solo travelers. You’ll have a selection of restaurants, bars, surf shops, and beach vendors to patronize between surfing and sunning. Stay at Tamarindo Diria for something right in the center of the action or Capitan Suizo for something a bit quieter.

Playa Guiones in the Nosara area is a quieter alternative to Tamarindo, known locally as one of the chillest beaches around. This area is famous for yoga, surfing, and general good vibes. Diane Lane and The Red Hot Chili Peppers love it here so why wouldn’t you?

Santa Teresa is perfect for the traveler who is part yogi, part surfer, part explorer.  Hit the famous waves with local lifetime surfers, visit Montezuma Waterfall, rent an ATV, or simply walk along the miles of rugged Nicoya coast for the perfect solo adventure.

Go on a Luxury Safari

Nayara Tented Camp for Solo Travelers

Nayara Tented Camp

Imagine having a luxury safari tent all to yourself without going all the way to Africa! You don’t have to travel too far for luxury solo travel experience because Costa Rica has you covered.  The brand new Nayara Tented Camp is restoring the mystery of the rainforest back to Arenal, while Origins Luxury Lodge has transformed the high-end hotel scene in Upala. The addition of Kasiiya to Papagayo’s coasts rounds out the luxury safari tent experience in Costa Rica.

The beaten path can be tempting, but solo travel is one of the best opportunities to dig deeper into your destination and do things you might normally not in a tour group. Costa Rica is one of the world’s best eco-travel destinations with a collection of incredible ecolodges to match. The tiny country packs a huge amount of biodiversity into a small area, making it the perfect stop for anyone who wants to sleep in the middle of the rainforest, float through mangrove estuaries, and learn about the exciting cloud forest ecosystem. Costa Rica ecolodges are growing in number, and our Experts have compiled a list of their favorites.

El Silencio Lodge & Spa | Bajos del Toro Cloud Forest

6 Best Eco Lodges in Costa Rica

Just 2 hours from San Jose is this one-of-a-kind ecolodge that creates a cloud forest experience you won’t find anywhere else. It is not common to find luxury off-the-beaten path, but at El Silencio Lodge & Spa you’ll find upscale cabins and fine dining blended seamlessly with local culture and sustainability. The hotel maintains an organic garden and trout pond from which guests can choose their own ingredients for preparation by the chef. On-site are hiking trails available to all guests, leading to 3 different waterfalls. Excellent bird watching, horseback riding, and coffee tours encapsulate the simple pleasure of the cool, misty cloud forest environment. The hotel is also involved in local affairs. Several of the employees and guides are locals who work as integral players in the operation of the hotel.

Lapa Rios Ecolodge | Puerto Jimenez, Osa Peninsula

6 Best Costa Rica Eco Lodges

The Osa Peninsula is Costa Rica’s most biodiverse destination with no shortage of tropical wildlife to fawn over. At Lapa Rios Ecolodge, you can watch Scarlet Macaws and toucans as you sip coffee on the deck of your private bungalow. The ecolodge is set into the rainforest, offering ocean views, self-guided nature trails, and waterfalls. Guests have the opportunity to learn about the sustainability practices maintained on the premises with a guided tour designed to highlight the importance of maintaining Costa Rica’s gorgeous natural wonders. Though the lodge is surrounded by wildlife and vegetation, this is no tent camp. Lapa Rios combines exceptional service with a unique design to create an upscale rainforest experience.

Rio Perdido Hotel | Bagaces

6 Best Eco Lodges in Costa Rica

The newest ecolodge on our list is Rio Perdido, an off-the-beaten-path hotel halfway between the beaches of Guanacaste and the Arenal Volcano. The individual bungalows provide rustic, laid-back charm with their simple design and swaying hammocks.

Tortuga Lodge & Gardens | Tortuguero

6 Best Costa Rica Eco Lodges

Tortuguero’s jungle canals are one of the country’s most unique natural attractions. Base yourself at Tortuga Lodge & Gardens to take advantage of the best tours and ensure the most comfortable way to see this Amazon-esque environment. This ecolodge sits along the river so guests can dine, sleep, and swim with a river view. Check out our list below.

Nayara Tented Camp

Hottest New Hotel Openings in Costa Rica

Arenal is the most popular destination in Costa Rica across the board. Families, couples, solo travelers, and everyone in between flocks to Arenal for zip-lining, hot springs, hanging bridges, waterfall rappeling and other Costa Rica adventure tours. The area attracts thousands of tourists per year but yourself from the hoards with the most unique new hotels in Costa Rica

Nayara Tented Camp is another brilliant extension of the Nayara luxury brand, already notorious in the Arenal hotel sceneNayara Tented is the sister hotel Arenal Nayara Hotel & Gardens and Nayara Springs Luxury Hotel (Adults-Only) next door. Known for their inventive dining options and impeccable service, the Nayara properties have added eyecatching new safaris-style tents to their luxury hotel catalog. Raising the bar for refined luxury in the Central American hospitality industry, the glamorous but thoughtful eco-resort restore the wonder of the rainforest back to Arenal.

Origins Luxury Lodge

Located off the beaten path in between Arenal and Papagayo, Origins Luxury Lodge is one of the most exclusive hospitality experiences in the country. The lodge is designed for high-end travelers looking to replicate the magic of a luxury African safari during their travels in Costa Rica, the less-trodden Upala region envelops guests in a unique eco-system where Costa Rica’s most nature and wildlife congregate. A stay at Origins includes access to highly-trained naturalist guides, who lead the hotel’s signature tours. Gourmet dining is a point of pride for Origins, where guests dine for the duration of their stay. With a limited number of lodges and villas available, the service is attentive and personalized.

This is the only lodge of its kind in Costa Rica and the only thing around for miles. Origins is climbing as a top destination for world travelers looking to explore Costa Rica from stylish digs in a unique location. Your globetrotter friends certainly haven’t been here.

Kasiiya Papagayo Luxury Wilderness Retreat

Hottest New Hotel Openings

The newest face in the Papagayo luxury hotel landscape is Kasiiya Papagayo Retreat. Papagayo is known for its calm, swimmable waters and Kasiiya centers it’s focus around it. The eco-resort reconceptualizes ‘barefoot luxury with carefully placed suites up and down the cliffsideWhether you stay high up on Kasiiya’s hill or down near the placid waters of Papagayo bay in a Beachfront Suite, you’ll be enjoying a preview of what’s to come for Costa Rica luxury hotels. Guests spend their days here snorkeling, paddleboarding, and kayaking their way around the exclusive Papagayo waters. Rancho Pacifico Hotel

Hottest New Hotel Openings in Costa Rica

Rancho Pacifico is technically not a new Costa Rica hotelbut the property’s jaw-dropping facelift – complete with a renovated pool and stunning one-bedroom villas – definitely deserves a look! Active couples who want to experience Costa Rica’s best rainforest without compromising style should consider Rancho Pacifico’s unique location: high up in the mountainside of Uvita on the South Pacific coastCocktails are enjoyed against a backdrop of amazing coastal views and mountains covered in the misty rainforest.

Check out the one-bedroom villa and fall in love with the private plunge pool and rainforest surroundings. Rainforest trails on-site, or travel to Corcovado National Park by boat for a day of wildlife spotting and hiking. More immediate to the Uvita area is the Marino Ballena National Park, home to the famous Whale’s Tale formation. This scenic coastal rainforest environment can be explored by foot or kayak. Spend the day relaxing by the pool and you might have a hard time going home.

The nearby South Pacific beaches are relatively unbothered by modern tourism, creating a refreshing alternative to Manuel Antonio. Spots like Playa Ventanas and Playa Uvita are gorgeous but a bit more primitive in terms of services. Don’t expect a Tamarindo vibe here.

Each of Amor’s casitas overlook the surrounding rainforest, creating an extraordinary space to recharge after a day of adventure tours. Wellness minded travelers can head to the full-service spa, the rainforest yoga platform, or the outdoor meditation space that floats among the trees. The hotel also boasts two on-site nature trails, which can be explored by foot or even horseback. Choose between organic gourmet dining and local Costa Rica specialties at Amor’s two restaurants, or just kick back with a cocktail at the thermal pool bar.
