Arenal Volcano + Manuel Antonio

Arenal Volcano and Manuel Antonio are a bit of a classic duo, particularly for first-time visits to Costa Rica. Some of the main differences between Manuel Antonio and Guanacaste would be that Guanacaste is more spread out and more of a tropical dry landscape. Manuel Antonio National Park is the main draw to the Central Pacific region with a denser rainforest environment, plentiful wildlife, and smaller boutique hotels.

Osa Peninsula

The Legend of Rio Celeste

Local legend has it that after God finished painting the sky, he washed his paintbrushes in Rio Celeste turning in the brilliant blue that fascinates us today.

Ranger Station

There is one ranger station within the park open daily from 8 am – 4 pm with restrooms, drinking water, restaurants, and first aid available.

The Rio Celeste Waterfall Trail

There is one hiking trail within Tenorio Volcano National Park which brings you past a multitude of wonders, but ultimately to the brilliant blue Rio Celeste. This challenging in-and-out trail – 3.7 miles in total – showcases the following highlights of the park (in order):

Rio Celeste Waterfall (250 stairs!)

The powerful Rio Celest Waterfall plunges 98 feet into a pool of bright blue water surrounded by dense tropical forest. The contrast is as striking in person as it is in photos – a true diamond in the rough.

From the ranger station to the waterfall turnoff, the trail is relatively flat and paved (about twenty minutes). Beyond that, the remainder of the hike is unpaved. Once you reach the turnoff point to the waterfall, you’ll need to descend a series of about 250 steep paved stairs. It’s a bit of a challenge on the return ascent, but it’s worth it! Just stop, breathe, and enjoy the scenery – often.

Some people choose to visit the waterfall last in the sequence to re-energize themselves before the trek back to the ranger station. If you choose to do that, the first highlight you’d come across would be Laguna Azul.

Laguna Azul: Beautiful Blue Lagoon

Many people say this magical little pool of blue water is reminiscent of the magic mermaid lagoon in Peter Pan.

Los Borbollones: Bubbling Geothermal Activity, Smells of Sulfur

After Laguna Azul, continue down to Los Borbollones, a spot in the river where sulfuric gases from the volcano bubble up through the water.

El Teñidero: Where 2 Rivers Meet

After crossing an Indiana-Jones-style bridge and a series of picturesque fixed low bridges, you’ll arrive at one of the last highlights of the trail. El Teñidero is formed where the minerals of two rivers meet (Quebrada Agria and Rio Buena Vista) – turning Rio Celeste bright blue. It’s an impressive sight to see as the otherwise normal-looking rivers converge into one electric blue current.

• The trail can get pretty muddy in the green season (May – December). Wear your hiking boots!
• Swimming is not permitted within Tenorio Volcano National Park.

Things to Know Before Visiting Rio Celeste Waterfall:

• It takes about 30 minutes to hike from the entrance to the top of the stairs to the waterfall (give or take).
• There are no restrooms inside the national park. There is only a bathroom at the ticket office.
• Single-use plastics are not permitted in the park. So don’t forget your reusable water bottle!
• The waterfall may not be as blue in the rainy season (mid-May – December).

If you’ve planned any Spring Break trip before, especially with your family or a group, you know the secret to success and savings is to plan early. Be on the lookout for flights as soon as all that holiday fever has subsided. With more and more direct flights available to Costa Rica, it’s highly recommended that you reserve your seats before they sell out to keep your vacation as seamless as possible. The same can be said for booking your vacation package. Stay on the ball, ask questions, and book it before space sells out.

Just Bring the Essentials.

The wonderful thing about packing for Costa Rica is that warm weather makes for light luggage. Have a bulky jacket? Wear it. While packing, save space for items you will bring home. Many Costa Rica hotels will handle your laundry or point you in the direction of a laundry mat. And if worse comes to worse, you can buy things there.

A couple of items that should make the cut? Sunscreen and first-aid essentials. Yes, I have fallen victim to the $40 dollar sunscreen trap at isolated tourist shops or popular national parks. I’ve come to feel that a mini first aid kit is also essential for any trip. This is especially true for Costa Rica, which is generally an outdoor, active destination. I will confess that I have personally taken a graceless tumble while exploring beaches and trails. Upon seeing that the tiny, local convenience store had limited stock, I had to venture out to the next town for a larger store with more options. Lessons learned. Generally, your hotel will have you covered, but you can never be too prepared. Some Band-Aids, Neosporin, and anti-septic wipes will go a long way.

Be Open-Minded, But Prepared.

As you might imagine, Spring Break is one of the most popular times of year for travel in Costa Rica. And as any good traveler knows, stuff happens. Flights get delayed. Beaches get crowded. If you go into your trip expecting some stuff, minor situations won’t come as such a shock. So, how can we minimize travel inconveniences? Plan ahead. Ask questions in the vacation planning process. Know what to expect from the hotels and destinations you’re considering before you book them. If you choose to stay at a larger resort, see if you can reserve beach chairs. Ask for chef recommendations at restaurants. Plan to fly into Costa Rica at a reasonable time in case you do experience flight delays. The bottom line is that in travel, stuff happens, but there are things you can do to minimize it. And booking with our travel experts is a great start!

While I can’t promise a magic solution that will make your ENTIRE vacation with the family a breeze, I can share some tips in hopes of making it easier. At the root of everything, plan ahead. Seeking expert advice also helps. Luckily, as Costa Rica Experts, we can do the legwork for you. If you provide the information, we can coordinate all the details of your trip according to your preferences: airport pick-ups, hotel stays, tours, and transportation. We can communicate your needs (allergies, special accommodations, you name it) so you don’t have to. However, let’s touch on some things to consider before traveling that will hopefully make your vacation … more of a vacation.

Don’t overpack.

Perhaps easier said than done, but it’s worth keeping tabs on the amount of stuff you bring along. Planning to do laundry or having the hotel wash clothes for you midway through the trip is one way to cut down on luggage weight. Just don’t forget any comfort blankets. Additionally, our Experts can arrange to have cribs in the room upon arrival at your hotel. Car seats can be arranged in pickup vehicles if needed. To alleviate the stress of carrying loads of luggage, consider a wheeled carry-on for your kids. Carrying their own suitcase can give them a feeling of independence while lightening your load. Maybe you can introduce it to them and let them practice before you leave.

Get the kids excited.

A little rainforest education before your trip can get kids excited about potential wildlife viewing opportunities.

If the kids are eager and interested, they’re bound to be more cooperative. Introduce the animals, rainforest, and culture of Costa Rica through books or toys. It’s also a great opportunity to get kids interested in learning basic Spanish! Furthermore, you might consider involving your kids in choosing excursions. If they had a hand in selecting the activity du jour, they’re bound to be enthusiastic and on good behavior.

Be strategic about timing — e.g. naps.

Do your kids have an afternoon nap? Plan it in. Maybe they would nap in the car over a long drive to an excursion. If the kids have a daily nap schedule, make sure that time is clear every day – which will ensure the rest of the day runs more smoothly. If it’s not possible on any given day, make sure to schedule some extra downtime for that day.

Plan for downtime.

Go-go-go is hard on everyone. Especially your kids. So whether you have nappers or not, leaving some afternoons open can really help everyone recharge and make the days of exploration more pleasurable.

Bring snacks.

Traveling can make it a bit difficult to predict when you might come to the next restaurant suitable for picky eaters (most kids). Of course, we’d all like our children to be adventurous eaters, but it may be easiest on everyone to provide some familiar foods on vacation. In short, make sure you have packed plenty of snacks and always a water bottle. The tap water in Costa Rica is safe to drink.

Skip airport lines if you can.

Lines and kids are not a great pairing. Things like checking in online before the airport and TSA Pre-check will make everyone’s life easier. The TSA line is shorter and doesn’t require the removal of liquids, electronics, shoes, or jackets. Global Entry will also be helpful when you return to the United States as you’ll receive expedited customs processing. You can skip long lines, use a kiosk, and be on your way. Lastly, if you can travel with only carry-on bags, it will also make the airport experience move faster.

Get local restaurant reservations.

Planning ahead can make venturing out of the hotel room for dinner after a long day at the pool more feasible.

Let me be clear, there’s nothing wrong with ordering room service or getting dinner at the hotel bar. For those nights that you’re feeling ready to venture out on the town with the fam, it can be helpful to get a lay of the land before you arrive at your destination. Furthermore, if you find you’ve come upon spotty WiFi (it’s bound to happen), it’s much easier if you’ve already done your homework or, even better, a Costa Rica Expert has done it for you! Ask a Costa Rica Expert or the hotel concierge for a list of 2-3 restaurants near each hotel. Then, you can call the front desk to request they arrange a dinner reservation and transportation at your convenience.

Minimize hotel hopping.

When traveling with small children, sometimes less is more.

Costa Rica is diverse and there is so much to see. So, I hesitate to recommend this, but I do feel that when traveling with small children keeping hotel hoping to a minimum will make everyone’s lives easier. The number of hotels will obviously vary based on the duration of your trip. For my family personally, I would probably try to keep the number of hotels to two or fewer in a seven-day period. It’s ok that you may not be able to cram everything in that you would have before you had kids, that just means there’s a reason to come back!

Minimize car time.

Particularly with the littles, extended car rides should be avoided for the mental health of everyone. Consider destinations relatively near the airport. From San Jose International Airport, you might look at Manuel Antonio National Park. From Liberia International Airport, consider the Papagayo Peninsula or Guanacaste. If your heart is set on someplace far-flung, domestic flights are an option worth considering!

Be flexible.

I think that pretty much speaks for itself. Just make sure to let your kids in on the secret too. If you can explain to them beforehand that travel doesn’t always go according to plan and that airports tend to have lines and will require patience, they may be slightly more tolerant or at least, more prepared.
